"One night in October 1942, Flight Sergeant Gatland was captain of an aircraft detailed to attack a target at Genoa. Heavy cloud obscured the target but despite this and opposing fire from the ground defences, Flight Sergeant Gatlan courageously pressed home his attack from a low level while his gunners engaged the searchlights and gun emplacements. This airman thoughout his many operational sorties, has set a fine example by his determination, ability and devotion to duty." By Such Deeds, p. 204 AWMM
