Waata was an awesome leader who was/is well respected by many a soldier. An officer, but not quite a gentleman, lol. Waata was always the joker and liked the mantle "work hard play hard - go hard or go home". The Platoon Commander of One Platoon, 1st Battalion RNZIR (based in Singapore/Malaysia) from May 1982 - May 1984 (1 Plt, A Coy, 1 Bn RNZIR). Waata lead by example and from the front, whether it be training for operations in the deep jungles of Malaysia or at the battles of Bugis Street, Waata could be counted on to have your back. RIP brother. Onward.
