  • James (Jim) Francis Dellaca
    Born Reefton 20th September 1914
    Died Hawera(Trinity Hospital) 17th June 2001
    Buried Waverley Cemetery
    Reg. No. 8344 Pvt. 20th Battalion 1939 – 45
    Jim enlisted on the 5th October 1939 and was shipped out on the 5th Jan 1940. He was part of the original members of the 20th Battalion. He fought in Greece and was then withdrawn to Crete. During the German Paratroopers assault on Crete he was wounded and captured. Jim was seriously wounded and had perforations and compound fractures (Tibia and Fibula etc) of left leg.
    Jim became a prisoner of war and transferred to Stalag VIII B Lamsdorf, Poland from 23rd May 1941 to 24th Nov 1943
    Jim was part of a prisoner exchange for prisoners (who had serious injuries etc) known as the “Barcelona Exchange”. They left Stalag VIII B, Lamsdorf on 20th Oct 1943 on a train bound for Marseilles, France where they were bought to Bar
