  • Son of Alexander and Margaret McMillan of Kaitangata, Otago, New Zealand,

Sergeant 1st Battalion Otago Regiment. Operations: British Front before Puisieux 14 August 1918. Awarded for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on active service. On the morning of the 14 August 1918, when it was suspected that the enemy had evacuated their trencheds in front of Gouzeaucourt, Sergeant McMillan took out a patrol. He went straight for the known enemy posts, and finding the first evacuated dashed forward to the enemy's main line. He incurred great risk from snipers and machine-guns. He sent back most valuable reports and kept going forward until he reached the Serre-Puisieux Road, when he came under heavy machine-gun fire. This NCO [Non Commissioned Officer] showed great dash, initiative and courage, and was fine example of what a patrol leader should be. He was killed in action France, 28 August 1918.
