"The death of Dr. Newton Quilliam, house surgeon at the Auckland Hospital, occurred yesterday after a severe illness extending over nearly seven weeks. Dr. Quilliam was the youngest son of Mr. J. H. Quilliam, of New Plymouth. Educated at Nelson College and the New Plymouth Boys' High School, Dr. Quilliam later proceeded to Otago University, but war service with the medical corps interrupted his studies. He had been at the Auckland Hospital about a year, and his death - which was due to pneumonia, has cut short a career of distinct promise. A sad circumstance is that two brothers, Mr. R. P. Quilliam, and Mr. C. W. Quilliam, lost their lives in the war. The only surviving brother is Mr. R. H. Quilliam, of New Plymouth, who also had war service. The only sister is Mrs. L. M. Horrocks, of Remuera. A vote of sympathy with Dr. Quilliam's relatives was carried at yesterday's annual meeting of the Auckland division of the British Medical Association. The funeral will take place at New Plymouth tomorrow." • Newton was my paternal grandfather's first cousin, one of four Quilliam siblings who served in the NZEF in WW1. He was in the Medical Corps and served on the Hospital Ship Marama in 1918. Post War he completed his medical degree and was a Surgeon at Auckland Hospital, when he tragically died of pneumonia in 1927. Lest we Forget.
