  • You were an important part of our childhood, filling that frame in the room where we slept so often at our Grandparents home in Kipling St, Johnsonville, Wellington. Our own Father was given your name while you were a mystery from long ago. I would lie awake at night wondering where you had been and what you had been like. You looked so much older than your years and I never comprehended until much later the sacrifice that you and so many of your comrades made. Reading of the experiences of you all at the Somme, I can only hope that you died quickly during the offensive on September 27 1916. Rest in peace Great Uncle Albert.

  • Though I never met you your brother was my fathers father. As a child I remember your photograph hanging in pride of place on my grand parents wall. You looked like a fine young man in your lemon squeezer hat. Thank you for your tremendous sacrifice and creating an indelible memory.
