  • Percy Bennett was the brother of Charles Herbert Bennett, of 63, Milton St., Nelson, Lancashire, England.

Remembered on the Ashburton War Memorial.

Name is listed in the Nominal Roll as Bennett, P.D.

Embarked Wellington, 4 March 1916; disembarked Suez, 8 April 1916.
Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, France, 10 May 1916; attached to NZ Base Depot, Etaples, 21 May 1916.
Detached to NZ Division, 11 June 1916.
Joined No 1 NZ Field Ambulance, 12 June 1916.
Detached to Divisional Sanitary Section, 25 June 1916; rejoined No 1 NZ Field Ambulance, 17 July 1916.
Died of suffocation, 9 August 1916.
Court of Enquiry, 9 November 1916, found 'death due to suffocation following acute alcoholism'.
Note on file: 'The Army Commander is unable to agree that no blame be [?] attachable to anyone. The conduct of S.M. Moor cannot be considered free from blame. It is clear from the evidence that Pte Bennett was drunk. This being so S.M. Moor as the senior present should have ordered his arrest & had him placed in the Guard Room & if Pte Bennett was in the helpless state of drunkenness disclosed by the evidence, a M.O. should have been sent for at once when the man's life might have been saved. It is also considered that more supervision should be exercised over the issue of rum to this Mess.'

Brother: Charles Herbert Bennett, 63 Milton Street, Nelson, Lancashire, England AWMM
