  • Matuschka was posted to France and joined 2 Battalion, Auckland Infantry Regiment, on 11 October, to play his part in the 3rd Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele).

    He fell ill on 21 November 1917, suffering from influenza. He spent two months in France under the care of medical authorities before transfer to England and admission to No. 1 New Zealand General Hospital, Brockenhurst. He died in January of lobar pneumonia. (Church 2002)
