  • After weeks of training in Egypt Edward Meek boarded the Ivernia from Alexandria bound for Southhampton, England.

Joined the 1 Battalion, Wellington Regiment in the Field on 30 September at Mametz Wood on the Somme. (Church, p.135)

4 October 1918, whilst in the Crevecoeur area near the Scheldt Canal, Edward Meek was wounded accidently in his right leg. He was evacuated to England and transferred to No.1 NZGH, Brockenhurst on 20 December.

"His injury was not the cause of his death, but the conditions under which he was living when he received it no doubt contributed to the development of phthisis pulmonalis (tuberculosis of the lung). " (Church, p.136)

Edward Meek was the penultimate NZEF soldier to die at Brockenhurst. AWMM
