  • Tongia, Taoro. WW1 regt 60776 NZ Army. Served with the Maori Pioneer Battalion Te Hokowhitu Atu, 3rd Rarotongan Contingent. Served in Egypt & Palestine. "Lest we Forget." These are the Facebook comments by Rachel Unuia as of Mon Jan 24, 2014 @ 4:16pm:- "This is dads famous great uncle. Taoro Tongia. A return serviceman he was returning from Europe after the first world war and was quaranteened on Sommes island in Wellington Harbour. He was arrested before the 21 days was up as everyman that was on the island had run out of cigarettes so he decided to swim to Petone to buy some. A quote that came about afterwards was "them Rarotongans fear nothing but themselves." Facebook comments by Tangata Unuia as of Thu Mar 12, 2015:- "After my gran uncle Taoro Tongia go through swimming to Petone from Sommes Island, he was arrested and taken to Witako Prison in Trentham near Upper Hutt.   • Taoro Tongia is my maternal Grand Uncle. My cousin Arerangi Tongia has an interesting history of my Uncles post war efforts to alleviate a tobacco shortage on Matiu / Somes Island quarantine station by swimming to Petone for supplies. That's what you call mateship. Total respect for you Uncle.
