    France. Feb 4th 17, Dear Bertie :

Just a note in case this reaches you which I hope it will. I am sending it with one of the boys to England. I have carried it waiting for a chance to post it ever since we left Armentiers. It went right through the Somme with me & I still hung on to it so I hope you will think it is worth it. I made it mostly myself & when I went on leave it was at the horse lines & I was on the guns. It will want polishing with brasso before showing it to anyone. It is made out of one of our 18 pounder shell cases. The contents I sent to Fritz. Inside it you will find two pieces of German driving band which I got mounted when I was on leave, fired at us while on the Somme & still have some Somme mud on them. The big piece is from an eight inch shell & the small piece from a seventy seven or whiz bang. Also inside is a shrapnel bullet wrapped in paper & also wrapped up in a piece of paper is two berries which I picked up from under a tree at Colombo & put in my pocket on the way to Egypt over eighteen months ago. That finishes the mixture hoping it arrives safely & in good order. Lots of love from your loving brother Alex xx in a terrible hurry. (Transcript of letter written by Alexander Muir from France, 4 February 1917, to his twin brother Robert Muir, also on active service.) AWMM
