  • Remembering my Great Uncles whom fought in WW1. The 4 Murphy Brothers (Dick, Mick, Paddy and Jack). With only Jack returning. Mick and Dick took their horses off their farm. Just a side note that Paddy was a very tall man at 6' 6" (very tall for his day). My Grandfather was a younger brother Owen.
  • Richard Murphy and his brother Michael both died at Galipoli. The family story is that one of them went looking for the other on the battlefield and neither returned. They lost another brother, Patrick, on the Western Front. A fourth brother Jack returned to New Zealand. As he was about to embark on a second "tour" a friend of his Mother's wrote to the government saying that Ellen had already contributed enough to the war effort. Jack therefore didn't have to go back to Europe to fight. My grandfather, Ted, was their second youngest brother. There is a photograph of the whole family (14 children and parents) taken in 1913. It is the last one of everyone taken.
