  • William attested in August 1916 and stated his DOB as 8 Jan 1896. Given that he is said to have been 87 at his death in 1985 it would seem he added 2 years to his age on enlisting in order to meet the age qualification. His second record show DOB as 10 Jan 1898. William contracted meningitis at camp and was medically discharged on 22 Jan 1917 before the departure of the 20th Reinforcements..
In June 1918 he was back in camp at Trentham being innoculated and embarked for England with the 41st Reinforcements. He had issues with a weak arm caused by a fracturted ulna before the war - he fell off a gate according to the records. In any event he was finally discharged 29 August 1919.
