  • Son of Mr and Mrs H.W. Needham of Woodford Road, Mt Eden Auckland.

He left New Zealand with the 4th Reinforcements on the 17th April 1915 and was killed in action on the assault on the Heights of Sari Bair adjacent to the Chunuk Bair Ridge on the eighth of August 1915. He was aged 27.

He was killed with 92 of his Regiment during this attack, all were positively identified as killed in action and the bodies left in the positions where they died. These men were not buried until the year of 1920 by the British War Graves Commission. By then none could be identified, and they were placed in individual graves with these words on the Grave Cross: "A New Zealand Soldier known unto God". He is named on the New Zealand Memorial at the summit of Chunuk Bair. This information has been supplied by an Auckland relative. AWMM
