  • In February 1916 D'Arcy Newell was promoted to Lance Corporal. He formed part of the major transfer of troops from Egypt to France at the beginning of April 1916, and joined 1 Battalion, Otago Regiment.
"The 1 Otago Regiment was involved in the attempt to take Polderhoek Chateau, set high on a promontory between two streams (Reutelbeek and Scherriabeek) surrounded by a swamp of mud and putrefaction. Although the attack was a failure and losses were servere, the British had managed to gain high ground nearby. D'Arcy Newell was wounded in the face by a sniper on 3 December 1917, the bullet passing through both cheeks." (Church, p.72)
D'Arcy was transfered to England on 12 December, by March he was on the Seriously ill list and died of his wounds in April.

Text of the Memorial plaque, Bank of New Zealand Arcade, Wellington, New Zealand: 'In Memoriam: The names inscribed upon this tablet are those of officers of the Bank of New Zealand who laid down their lives in the Great War AD 1914-1919 waged against the nations of central Europe - Germany, Austria, Turkey and Bulgaria - who sought by force of arms to obtain world-wide dominion. In honour of their patriotism and valour. In admiration of their sacrifice. And in grateful perpetuation of their glorious and ennobling memory this monument is reverently dedicated. Their Name Liveth for Evermore.'
