    Two periods of war service:
    (1) War service: Western Front
    Wounded in action, Polygon Wood, 22 December 1917 (High Explosive shell fragments penetrated under surface of tongue; two lower incisor teeth broken: extracted); admitted to No 2 NZ General Hospital, Walton-on-Thames, 30 December 1917; transferred to Queen's Hospital, Sidcup, 21 February 1918.
    Medical Board, 22 February 1918, categorized injury as 'slight; not permanent'.
    (2) War service: England
    Embarked Wellington, 17 August 1918; disembarked London, 30 October 1918, and marched in to Sling Camp; posted to Otago Infantry Regiment. Transferred to Auckland Infantry Regiment, 6 November 1918.
    Marched to NZ Command Depot, Codford, 26 February 1919; on leave, 14 June 12919, to report to Sling Camp, 12 July 1919.
    Commenced return to New Zealand from Plymouth on board 'Hororata', 28 September 1919; discharged, 18 October 1919.
    Total war service: 1 year 198 days (of which 1 year 35 days was abroad)
    Medal: British War Medal AWMM
