  • Oliver Charles Edward Nicholson was the son of Charles and Elizabeth Nicholson of Auckland. He was married to Eina Nicholson (nee Kay) on 21 July 1915 and together they had a daughter, Francis Mary, born on 8 March 1915

    Oliver enlisted for service on 2 June 1917, embarking for the United Kingdom from Wellington on 31 December 1917. On 25 February 1918 Oliver disembarked at Glasgow, Scotland and marched into Larkhill on 27 February 1918 where he was posted to C Company

    On 17 April 1918 he marched into Grantham to join the Machine Gun Company. 3 June 1918 saw Oliver transferred from the Machine Gun Company Depot to service in the field in France. The next day he marched into the Machine Gun Battalion ex the England Depot at Camiers, France

    Nicholson joined the 3rd New Zealand Training Battalion in the field on 8 June 1918

    On 31 August 1918 he joined the New Zealand Machine Gun Battalion and was posted to A Company

    On 12 September 1918 Oliver was killed in action in France. It is believed that his death took place in the Battle of St Mihiel, at Bapaume, which took place on those dates of the recorded death in action and in which New Zealand forces were involved

    Oliver's personnel record states that he was buried at map sheet reference 57C, map reference Q 27-a-92 as reported by the Burial Officer IV Corps on 27 November 1918. His personnel record also notes that medals and scrolls were sent to his next of kin, Mrs Eina Nicholson (wife) at Whangarei AWMM
