    Private C. W. Neild [sic], killed in action, formerly resided at Paeroa with his parents. He was 22 years old, and when he enlisted was in the employ of the Waihi-Paeroa Gold Extraction Company. He left New Zealand with the eighteenth reinforcements, and four months ago was wounded. (Auckland Weekly News, 1 November 1917, p. 22)

    Cyril Whiteburst Nield, Private 29461, Hawke's Bay Coy, 1st Bn. Wellington Regiment, New Zealand Expeditionary Force. Killed in action during the third battle of Ypres in Belgium by an artillery shell 100 years ago on 4 October 1917 aged 22. Cyril was buried in an unmarked grave just behind the lines and is now remembered with honour at the Tyne Cot Memorial, NZ Apse, Panel & West- Vlaanderen, Belgium. Cyril was the eldest son of Jesse and Emily Maud (nee Birley) Nield of Paeroa and his sacrifice is remembered by the greater Nield family and his many nephews, nieces and cousins. New Zealand Herald.
