    • Jonathan Notley was the husband of Mrs. E. J. Notley, of Auckland, New Zealand.

The transport Transylvania was torpedoed in the Mediterranean in May, while conveying troops to the near East. There was regrettable loss of life, 413 men being killed or drowned. Two of them S.S.M. J.T. Notley and Trooper J.W. Magnusson were New Zealanders, part of the draft of convalescent mounted men on their way to rejoin their units. AWMM

  • My grandfather George McLaren (12/2419) was a corporal in the 1st Auckland Infantry Battalion on the Western Front in the 1916.

His WW1 diary notes a humorous incident where George and his mates were fined for returning late to camp one night. George blames Sgt Major Notley ...

"Tuesday the 20th of June 1916 - Throwing dummy bombs for practice. Jim Richie, Fred Brooking, W. Hardine and myself were fined 7 days pay today for being half an hour late on Monday night. They have put the clock on an hour and we forgot about this. This is the first time I have been crimed in the army, and this is what a man gets for "playing the game" for 17 months. "ROTTEN SWINES". Pleasant times RSM Notley of police, if I meet you in old NZ".

George was not a bloke to be messed with !!!

It's sad to see that Sgt Major Notley didn't survive the war. May he rest in peace.
