  • "Advice that his nephew, Flight-Lieutenant Frederick James Sharland, R.F.C., was killed in action in France on October 24, has been received by Mr. F. W. Brookfield, of St. Heliers Bay. Lieutenant Sharland, who is the son of the late Mr. F. C. Sharland, was 33 years of age. He was born and educated in Auckland. After attending a course at the Kohimarama Flying School, Lieutenant Sharland, accompanied by his mother, went to England, arriving early last March. After passing the tests of the Royal Flying Corps with honours, Lieutenant Sharland was granted a commission in the corps, and was on duty in France till the time of his death."
