SWEPT TO SEA
DROWNING FEARED BODY NOT RECOVERED TRIED TO CROSS AWATERE
Swept out to sea while attempting to cross the Awatere River on horseback. Mr. Charles Chambers, aged 33, farm labourer, was last seen .struggling in the surf some distance from the shore shortly after 10.30 a.m. on Saturday. He is believed to have been drowned, but the body has not yet been recovered. . In company with two other riders, Mr. Chambers was crossing the Awatere River, which was swollen with heavy rain, at a point along the main road half a mile; from Te Araroa--The horse. and both the rider and animal .were washed downstream. for 300yds. before the horse regained its footing in shallow water. Mr. Chambers was seen to mount the horse and ride to the bank, where he again selected a position to cross the stream. He got part way across when the strong current of the full tide again made the horse lose its f
