Cpl. Waaka was a member of C Company during the attack on the night of 19/20 April 1943, during which his company sustained heavy casualties. After his company had consolidated and on learning of the plight of the remnants of B Company, who were in Takrouna Fort, this soldier, although weary and tired, immediately volunteered to go to their assistance. Pte. Waaka remained with the remnants of B Company and assisted him to hold the hill against the counter-attacks and while under constant mortar shell-fire. Pte. Waaka's coolness and bearing during the attack and throughout the two days occupation of the hill by the small band of survivors was of the highest order.
