During the battle of Alamein, Egypt, in the attack on Deir el Munassisb on the night of 3/4 September 1942, Sgt Davis single-handed attacked and killed the crew of ten manning an 8mm gun. He then used the gun effectively against the enemy, knocking out two machine-gun posts. When the enemy counter-attacked with grenade and machine-gun fire etc., and while the Company was in a precarious position, Sgt David used a captured medium machine-gun against them effectively. His leadership and control was a potent factor in the success of the attack and defeating the counter-attack and he showed courage and initiative throughout the action. (London Gazette 5/11/1942 (I).
