"On the morning of 4 August 1944, during the attack on Balbani, Pte. Ngapo showed outstanding courage and determination in his duties as linesman. With complete disregard for his own personal safety he followed closely behind the attacking companies until they reached their objectives, laying the lines under intense mortar and shell fire. On several occasions throughout the day and following night, these lines were cut in a number of places by enemy shelling, but Pte. Ngapo continued. Pte. Ngapo's outstanding gallantry and devotion to duty helped in no small measure the success of the operation, he was personally responsible for maintaining vital communications during this difficult and dangerous period. (London Gazette 10/5/1945 (I)) The National Archives. Recommendation for Award for Ngapo, James Maaka. (Ref. WO 373/11/634). Military Medal.10 May 1945" AWMM
