  • Lesley (aka Les) married 2nd Lieut William George Hill (5378) in Helwan, Egypt in 1943. Bill was resting up at Maadi Camp from the rigours of the North African campaign during World War II when he meet Lesley (known in the family as Les.)

Les much later said that Bill proposed to her on the first day she met him. She told him not to be so silly but accepted him five days later.

Family legend says Bill dived into the pool at Maadi and swam up in front of Les, then proposed

Les’s brother’s Alex and Murray were also at Maadi at the time. They telegraphed home to their parents. “Les getting married, send 20 pounds.” They were both able to attend the wedding. (Family Source, 5 May 2016). AWMM
