Verona (Peg) was a strong, independent woman. Born in Patea in 1917 to Rudloph Hunger and Martha McCarty, she was the third of four children (Alan, John and Peter). She attended and boarded at New Plymouth Girls High, then moved to Wellington and worked for a liquor importing company. While taking several papers at Victoria University she joined the Red Cross group. After WWII was announced she volunteered as a nurse. During her 3+ years away Verona/Peg served at the No 2 General Hospital and on the Oranje hospital ship. She has a remarkable diary and memorabilia from this period. On her return she resumed her job in Wellington. She met Edmond Roy (Ted) Kelsey on a skiing trip to Ruapehu. After a long-distance courtship they married in 1949. John was born in 1950 and Jane in 1955. Ted worked for the Tourist Bureau and was posted to Australia, where Peg became house mother to the other Kiwi expats. They retired to Whitianga in 1976. Ted dies ten years later and Peg built her own life again. She was made a life member of the Mercury Bay RSA and by the end of her long life was the only woman WWII veteran attending the Anzac services at the Auckland cenotaph.
