  • Te Kiato Riwai also known as Kia helped form the Otautahi Concert Party at the outbreak of the Second World War, which helped to raise funds for the war effort and also farewelled soldiers going overseas. She was also selected as a member for the Voluntary Aid Division (VAD), she served overseas with the 3rd New Zealand General Hospital, in Italy. She later served in a Hospital in Kent, England, caring for ex-prisoners of war, and in Folkestone looking after soldiers on leave. She returned to New Zealand on board the Hospital Ship, Maunganui. She was awarded the British Empire Medal for her war service in the 1946 New Year Honours. After the war she ran a cake and confectionary shop for six years. In 1952 she was appointed the welfare officer in the Department of Maori Affairs, Christchurch, and was also awarded as a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire for her outstanding service to Maori people.
