  • William Fergus Paterson (known as Fergus) was newly elected to the position of Mayor of Geraldine, Sth Canterbury, New Zealand when he was called up for active service. He was also the doctor in the local Geraldine community. When he died his brother, Archibald (Archie) Aird Paterson (1888-1967), No. 36783, Sergeant, 3rd New Zealand Rifle Brigade, was at his side. Such was the extent of deaths from the Spanish Flu that there was trouble accessing a coffin for his funeral as can be seen in internal Army correspondence in his file. Last year we had the pleasure of researching my Great Uncle for a commemorative gathering at the Geraldine Coquet Club on the 100th anniversary of the clubhouse/pavillion the croquet club uses. The pavillion was orignally built in rememberance of the loacl hockey players that had fallen in WW1. Fergus had an association with the croquet club as their president
