    • Son of John James and L. Patterson, of Queen St., Dannevirke AWMM
    • Gifted pianist who grew up in the Hawkes Bay and been a member of the Dannevirke Rifles. Fred was working in Sydney as a bank clerk when war broke out. He may have been visiting his younger brother who was living in Timaru, when he decided to join up. The 2nd (South Canterbury) Company main body landed on Anzac Cove midday 25 April 1915.
      29/5/15 Received ‘GS wound, abdomen’ near Quinn’s Post (the same day that Major Hugh Quinn, the commander of C Company also aged 27, was killed there)
      30/5/15 Taken to 1st Australian Casualty Clearing Station
      30/5/15 Died of wounds
      Buried in Beach Cemetery Public - Roger Thomas Gordon - Other relative - 5 August 2020 - Military Personnel File, Family papers
