Described as an ‘immaculate player’, Fred Allen went on to become the most successful All Black coach ever: during his tenure, between 1966 and 1968, the team won all 14 tests. His renowned skill for motivating his players earned him the nickname ‘The Needle’.

      ALLEN, Frederick Richard (Fred). KNZM, OBE. Died peacefully on the 28th April 2012 aged 92. Loved and devoted husband of the late Norma, loved father of Marianne and the late Murray adored Grandfather of Ines and Katia. Having served in WWII in the 30th and 27th Battalions, Fred was a true patriot who was devoted to the service of both his country and his fellow men. He will live in our memories forever. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the SPCA, PO Box 43221 Mangere, Auckland. A service will be held in the Level 5 Lounge, North Stand, Eden Park and entry from Walters Road.   • Fred was one of six children, my mother Merle was one of three sisters, Mabel and Audrey being the other two. He had two brothers Alec and Frank all three including himself served in the second world war and survived, Fred was the last living when he died.
