They undertook to notify him when he would be required.In the meantime he was ballot for army service came up and he joined the signals section of 5 Divisional Signals and trained with the Otago Mounted Rifles as a wireless mechanic until 27 March 1943. He transferred to the RNZAF at Harewood as a wireless mechanic as was his original intention in 1940.
