  • Mr Black was the son of George Black and his mother's maiden name was Oakley. He was educated at Koeke School and Taihape District High School.

    He was married to June Hayman at Taihape Presbyterian Church. They had four children: Janet, Eleanor, Glennis Anne, Carol Elazabeth, John Ian.

    He was captured at El Alamein on 22 July 1942 on his first time in action. He was a POW in both Italy and later in Germany. At the end of hostilities he was flown to Rheims, France by US Troop carrier and then by Lancaster bomber to England. He then returned to New Zealand in September 1945, very pleased to be home again.
