    • Colin Black was the son of Sydney and Constance Buxton Black, of Weston, New Zealand. AWMM
    • Born 1 May 1897 - at Nelson.
      Son of Mrs C. Buxton Black - of Wellington (previously of Nelson).
      Employed - as a Clerk - at Wellington City prior to enlistment for war service.
      Enlisted for war service on 5 October 1916 - at Awapuni Military Training Camp, Palmerston North, North Island.
      Posted as a Private with the New Zealand Medical Corps on 7 October 1916 - at Awapuni.
      Embarked for overseas war service - from New Zealand - aboard HT 'Aparima' on 16 February 1917.
      On 9 May 1917 Colin joined the 4th New Zealand Field Ambulance 1NZEF - at France.
      On 24 June 1917 he was admitted sick to the 4th New Zealand Field Ambulance - in the field. He returned to active duty soon after.
      On 12 October 1917 Private Colin Buxton Black was wounded in the field (Mustard gassed) - at Passchendaele, Belgium. The same day he was admitted to the 4th New Zealand Field Ambulance in the field - and then to a Casualty Clearing Station. The same day he was again transferred to the 3rd Australian Field Ambulance - and finally to the 17th Casualty Clearing Station.
      Three days later - on 15 October 1917 - Private Colin Buxton Black, from Nelson, died of the effects of Mustard Gas Poisoning - at the 17th Casualty Clearing Station - Passchendaele, Belgium. He was 20 years of age.
      12 October 1917 - at Passchendaele, Belgium - is considered by New Zealand Military Historians as 'New Zealand's Blackest Day'.
      On that one day - 12 October 1917 - in the first 4 hours of fighting 846 New Zealand Officers and soldiers were killed in action - or died of wounds in the field. The total casualty rate - of New Zealanders - for those 4 hours of fighting - on 12 October 1917 - was 2700 men. Public - Jenifer - Researcher - 4 April 2020 - Military File.
