  • Jack Bennett, a farmer from the Wairarapa, served in Egypt and Italy, then went to Japan as a member of the 27 Battalion, New Zealand's contribution to the British Commonwealth Occupational Force in Japan (Jayforce).

Jack Bennett is quoted in the 'Scars on the Heart' exhibition, describing his experience with the 27th Battalion in Japan, 'It rained all day with a strength that I have never seen anywhere else. It had a mournful sound and, in our present state of boredom, drives us nearly mad.'

A number of items belonging to Jack Bennett, relating to his overseas service, are displayed in the exhibition 'The End at Last' of 'Scars on the Heart' in the Auckland War Memorial Museum. AWMM
