  • Mr Collister was imprisoned in Campo 57 in the Udine. Below is a description of the conditions, supplied by the wife of another Prisoner of War, (Mrs V Young).

After fourteen months, on September 13th 1943, the Prisoners from Campo 57 were moved by train, open cattle trucks, to Germany to Stalag VIIIA at Gorlitz.

They remained there until February 15th 1945 when the Russians were advancing on Germany. The Germans started the Prisoners on a long march of 600 miles across Germany, to avoid the Russians freeing them. They were eventually released by British and American troops in April 1945.
