  • My grandfather George McLaren (12/2419) fought in the 1st Auckland Battalion with Ernest (Ernie) Payne. Both men left NZ with the 5th Reinforcements.

George's diary mentions Ernie getting wounded whilst in the Armentieres sector on the western front.

"Thursday the 8th of June 1916 - Had a marvelous escape this morning, shell burst at bivouac door where I was sitting. It smothered me & thought the side of my face was blown off, but after I shook myself came out of it with a small cut on side of face and ear swollen, my rifle smashed to pieces. Ernie Payne & Wally Timison (?) got slightly wounded and went off to hospital".

Very sad to see that Ernie was killed soon after on the 28th of September, which would have been the 2nd charge of the Auckland Battalion during the Battle of the Somme. George was wounded during the same event.

May Ernie rest in peace ... and we will remember them.
