  • Whilst a prisoner of war he escaped from prison camp at Canea, Crete to the hills. Recaptured he was sent to camp at Henaklion, Crete and there was involved in building an airport.

Sometime in 1942 he was sent to Salonika, North Greece camp and then taken off train in Belgrade, put in hospital there and sometime after transferred into prison camp 18D.

Later he was shifted to Wolfsberg 18A till nearly the end of the war when they were shifted to places he didn't know. He escaped again and remained hidden until the Germans threw away their arms.

    Discharged perhaps April 1946

Cenotaph record initially prepared with the serviceman in 1998. An Olive Tree (Olea europaea) planted close to the Auckland War Memorial Museum in the grounds of the Auckland Domain commemorates those who fought on Crete. The plaque at the base of the tree reads: This Olive Tree was presented to the New Zealand Veterans of the Battle for Crete by the people of Galatos in Crete in respect and the esteem of the bond formed during and after the Battle of Crete May 1941.
