DFC. 1943. A pilot of exceptional merit. He has led his flight in numerous sorties over France, Belgium and Holland , in the course of which much damage has been inflicted on the enemy. In October last year, when he was participating in an attack against enemy shipping, intense and accurate anti-aircraft fire was encountered. A shell exploded behind Flight-Lieutenant Fittall's cockpit, wounding and dazing him, while his radio transmitter caught fire. He, nevertheless , returned to his base after flying some hundreds of miles before landing safely. AWMM
