  • Joined Public Service at 18 years and served in Departments of Customs, Education, Health, Labour and Statistics, retiring from the latter, after 42 years service, in August 1983.

    Called up on 1 September 1942 : Discharged 30 March 1946 having served 1 year 260 days in New Zealand and 1 year 317 days beyond New Zealand.

    In New Zealand served 9 months in the P.O.W. Camp Featherston and 13 months with the 13 Field Ambulance, Johnsonville.

    Embarked as part of 11th Reinforcements in Wellington on HMNZTS 83 (alias the Rhys) on Friday 31 March 1944.

    Arrived Freemantle (Western Australia) on Saturday 8 April : departed Friday 14th. Arrived Aden on 29th but sailed on 30th for Port Tewfik (Suez) arriving 3 May. At Maadi Base Camp from 4 May -5 July serving in Base Hospital.

    Hospitalised (with pneumonia 9-18 June 1944).

    Transferred to C.M.F. - Left Alexandra on 12 July on SS Delwarra bound for Taranto, Italy arriving on the 16th. Transferred to Advanced Base (about 20 miles from Taranto) and served there in base Hospital until 12 September .

    Transferred to 2 General Hospital at Caserta, Naples on 13 September and remained there til Friday 2 February 1945.

    Transferred to Division (6th Field Ambulance) joining at Forli and saw active service therefrom to Trieste (nice place - what memories!)

    Transported back to NZ on "Orion" landing in Wellington on 10th February 1946. AWMM
