Veteran recorded his unit as RAF, he is recorded on the POW list as RNZAF crew.A file of interesting documents relating to Mr Giddens service, POW experiences and reunion with Mr Gordon Mellor, navigator of the Halifax Bomber from which both men bailed out over Belgium in October 1942, is held in the Museum Library. These papers include copies of a map of the area he was shot down, an abridged version of the days and nights between 4 October and 9 October when he was captured by the Germans, the letter informing his mother that he was a prisoner of war at Stalag VIIIB dated 14 November 1942, copies of concert programme and camp newspaper (covers scanned to this record but complete copies in file), Mr Giddens' diary (photocopy of the original plus a typed transcript) recording the 'Long March' which began in January 1945 and ended in April with graphic descriptions of the experience, newspaper printed on board the Andes on the return trip to New Zealand, The Southern Cross printed in London 2 June 1945, The Camp, Berlin, 7 January 1945, The Stars and Stripes (German Edition) 8 May 1945, and various articles from newspapers in New Zealand regarding POW reunion in 1985 and docking of the Andes in Lyttelton October 1945.
