    When he enlisted as an Ordinary Seaman in Fleet Air Arm, he was a Probationer Naval Airman.

    Served in the NZ Division of the Royal Navy from 30 July 1941 to 15 November 1942 aboard HMNZS Leander.

    Was bases at HMNZS Philomel from 16 November 1942 to 8 March 1943.

    Married Anne Patricia Lockyer of Te Aroha at "St Matthews in the City", Auckland on 17 February 1943.
