  • Mr Hood volunteered for service.

    His first embarkation destination was Fiji for 6 months training, he then left for the Middle East

    Mr Hood was captured on 15 July 1942 on Ruweisat Ridge, El Alamein. He spent 6 weeks in Benghazi Transit Camp. For Mr Hood North Africa was followed by 7 months in Campo 57, Udine, Northern Italy.

    He then spent 4 months in Campo 106 in early 1943 working in the rice fields of the Po River Valley.

    On 12 September 1943 he escaped into the mountains of Northern Italy and crossed the Alps into Switzerland where he spent a year before being repatriated to NZ.

    He arrived home on 24 December 1944.
