Mr Henderson embarked from New Zealand for overseas service three times.

Mr Henderson writes of his service in the latter part of the war in Europe and as part of J Force, 'I had returned to Egypt with the 15th Reinforcements at the end of the War in Europe in 1945 and chose to stay on in Maadi to help wind up the NZ Base, filling the position of GSO3 under Colonel Jack Porter.

I returned to NZ at the end January or early February 1946 and while on leave was contacted by the Military Secretary to see if I would join the relief draft to Japan as Staff Captain "A" for the combined BCOF HQ [British Commonwealth Occupation Force]. (This was a regular force position but due to the ravages of war, NZ had too few regular officers left). This I did and so returned to Papakura camp in early March 1946 to help select and train the replacement draft for 22 Battalion in Japan. We embarked for Japan at the beginning of August 1946.

I was promoted to Lieutenant on 1 March 1945 and to Temporary Captain on 15 June 1947. This was made substantive on 1 June 1947.'
