  • Son of George Augustus Hawkes (WW1 48793) and Lillias Hawkes of Takapuna, Auckland.

    Graeme wrote notes in the family genealogy book: "A medic; served in the Middle east. Served in Field Ambulance Unit, taken prisoner of war at Sidi Rezegh then spent 18 months in Italy."

    After the war he had a pharmacy business in Te Aroha.

    Three brothers served in WW2: the eldest brother served in the Navy; Graeme Bradshaw Hawkes (38061) a POW and David Handforth Hawkes (NZ40739) who was killed in RNZAF flying training accident in New Zealand.
