    In 1998 he was Chairman of the Committee writing the book The desert railway : the New Zealand Railway Group in North Africa and the Middle East during the Second World War (2003).

    Two brothers served in WW2: Marshall Leaf (RNZAF) and Norman William Leaf (27733), 17 Railway Company.

    17th Railway Operating Unit worked closely with 10th, 13th Construction and 16th Operating Companies. Cenotaph record initially prepared with the serviceman in 1998 and 2012 AWMM
