  • Mr Jones was in the Territorials at Auckland Grammar School from the age of 16. He joined the Royal New Zealand Navy at the outbreak of World War II as an ordinary seaman in Patrol Boats in the Auckland Harbour and Hauraki Gulf. He was then selected for officer training under Scheme B in the United Kingdom.

On graduating from King Alfred College, Greenwich he was posted to Scotland for anti-submarine training which involved being submerged in a submarine for one day.

He returned to London and was posted to Canada Staion for duty aboard MS Corvette Lipscombe for two years on mid Atlantic convoy duty, out from Sydney, Nova Scotia.

He was then posted to MFV (Motor Fishing Vessel) 1938 en route for India, via Gibraltar, Malta, Alexandria, Suez Canal, Masaw Eritrea. The MFVs were in a group until the MFB 1938 broke down at Aden and was towed by a British Destroyer at Aden to Cochin, India.

At the end of the war Sub Lieutenant Jones went to Colombo to return home on the British Aircraft Carrier Empress to Wellington, New Zealand.
