  • Son of Grattan William and Mary MacShane, of Takaka, Nelson, New Zealand.

    Two sons, brothers Arthur MacShane (8973) and Charles MacShane (19246) served in WW2.

    Major MacShane was an instructor of CMT training before being posted to Waiouru as camp Regimental Sergeant Major until he was commissioned in 1958.

    His final posting before retiring was two years as observer with the United Nations on the ceasefire line between Pakistan and India .
