      "Flight Lieutenant Moffatt completed numerous missions of which the majority were of a special nature. On one of these his aircraft was attacked by six enemy fighters. By his skill he succeeded in evading the enemy and eventually completed the sortie. The high standard set by this officer has been a fine example to all" Hanson, p. 353 AWMM

  • Son of The Hon. William Moffat, M.L.C., and of Kathleen Moffat (nee McGline or McGlone), of Palmerston North.

    "Was at school in 1931-33 passing University Entrances and gaining a higher learning certificate. Bill was a School Prefect and Captain of the 1st XV in 1933. After enlisting he went overseas in April 1942, ans subsequently served in Stirlings and Lancasters, making many operational flights and being awarded the D.F.C for meritorious service." I.R. Matheson Papers.

    Three brothers served in WW2: Alan Vincent Moffatt (458861); William Moffat (RNZAF) and Joseph Raymon Moffat (NZ424871). Will flew Lancasters over Europe. Joe flew fighters over Italy and was killed in 1945. Alan fought as an officer with the 28 (Maori) Battlion.

    Name spelled vaiously as Moffatt and Mofat. Mother's maiden name spelled as McGlone by CWGC (October 2010)

    Auckland Museum, Scars on the Heart Gallery. Item on display is: a hat and souvenirs taken from a German padre killed at Faenza are on display at the Auckland War Memorial Museum exhibition 'Slogging up Italy' of 'Scars on the Heart'. Alan Moffat (458861) is quoted, 'I was lucky, he was unlucky.' AWMM
