  • Mr Pike went to Crete in a reinforcement platoon under the command of Sergeant J D Hinton. In Athens he joined 15 platoon under the command of Charles Upham.

Below is Mr Pike's description of his POW experiences."After we were caught at Belhamed we went to Derna then to Benghazi. After about a week or so, about 90 were taken to Tripoli. About 40 of us were put on an old tramp and after 6 nights and 5 days we arrived in Trapani, Sicily. After a week we went to Pertino and then to Campo 57 about 25 December 1941. About the end of May 1943 we went to a working camp (Arbeitskommando) 103/6 at Ampezzo. When the Itis packed it in we went to Treviso.

The Huns picked us up there and we left for Germany 12 o'clock 13 September 1943. We arrived at Moosburg VIIA at 5 pm 16 September. I went straight to Camp Hospital and at 11pm was operated on for an interseption by Surgeon Major Beaumont of the United States army.

I had No 83628 given to me in hospital. Slipped away with my mates to Altengrabow XIA (HELL HOLE). From there to Arbeitskommando 7002 Ufingen. Worked there for 16 months. Spent 2 days on the walk and was released at Haberstadt by the 9th American Army about 12 April 1945. AWMM
