    • Companion of the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) AWMM
      DSO: New Zealand Gazette, 2 May 1946. Citation: "Lieutenant Colonel H.T.W. Nolan commanded 4 New Zealand Field Regiment throughout the period under review ... Lieutenant Colonel Nolan, by personal leadership of his Regiment, did everything possible to ensure that this Brigade was given the best artillery support available ... On 18 April when 9 Brigade met strong resistance ... Lieutenant Colonel Nolan, himself well forward, quickly appreciated the situation and was able to bring heavy artillery fire from his own and other Regiments, thus not only causing enemy casualties, but saving casualties amongst our own troops. His personal example and control of his observation posts were responsible in giving the infantry great confidence ... In all his appointments, his devotion to duty and leadership has been outstanding." (Haigh & Polaschek, p189) The enemy retreated slowly before 9 Brigade on the 19th [April 1945] and there were many calls for support from the 4th Field. Lieutenant Colonel Nolan had personally deployed his OPs, and he skilfully controlled the fire of his own regiment and at times of other regiments. He was later awarded a DSO and, though the citation mentions 18 April, it was clearly this day that was chiefly intended. (2 NZ Divisional Artillery, p718) AWMM

    Haigh & Polaschek state that Nolan was appointed Brigade Major (BM) of the New Zealand Artillery (NZA) in December 1943. The Official History of 2 NZ Div Artillery states that he served as BM NZA from August to November 1944.

    Promoted to Lt Colonel in March 1945. Served as Commanding Officer (CO) of 4 Field Regiment, March - December 1945.

    Returned to New Zealand in December 1945.
